The girls wanted to dress up. So, we dressed them up and took them to a nursing home. The residents really enjoyed their costumes! To confuse everyone who reads this blog we dressed Ladybug as a Poodle, Monkey as a Ladybug, and Panda as a bunny. Now, are you with me? :)

The Accomplices in the Great Chocolate Harvest
The Great Chocolate Harvest
Kuddos to Julee! Very cute!
THE "TRUE" HALLOWEEN STORY©
By Julee Brynestad
A few years ago there was quite the discussion between those who did and those who did not "do" Halloween. I've pretty much just sat back and taken in all these [comments], not just now, but year after year, regarding Halloween, and have finally decided to speak up on the subject.
While I appreciate all of the input by various individuals, I'm concerned that we have all missed the boat on this one, both historically and practically. It is my belief that Halloween is the invention of PMS driven women, crazed for chocolate! (Which is a spooky sight, in and of itself!)
Somewhere, way back in the dark ages of PMS (before Midol and Prozac), there was a group of women friends who ran out of chocolate. During the evening when the lights were on, but the curtains were not yet drawn, they could see across the fence and into the neighbor's windows, that chocolate resided there. These desperate and crafty women plotted and planned a way to obtain the necessary chocolate, without resorting to unlawful activities. These women dressed their little darlings up for 2 reasons, 1) 'cause who would refuse those sweet chubby cheeks? And 2) 'cause they didn't want the neighbors to know exactly whose parent's those chubby cheeks belonged to. The darlings loved playing dress-up and mommy told them to 'go show the neighbors.' Let the reader understand, it was commonplace for the neighbors to 'ooohh' and 'aaahhh,' and quickly rush around the house, looking for a treat for their unexpected visitor. So those moms sent these innocent children, door to door, while they hid in the shadows, careful to keep an eye on the kids and take note of who gave out the best goodies and who refused.
Their little plot worked wonders and history was born! The wee ones came home loaded down with goodies. Of course, being the 'good' parent, they sorted out the Snickers from the Sweet Tarts - keeping the chocolate for themselves and rewarding the kiddies with all the rest.
Soon enough, a problem arose, when their rations ran out. What to do, what to do? Then it hit them, spread the word! They realized the potential popularity of such an event, should other PMS chocolate deprived women find out. They began to organize, quickly and with haste, the obvious starting point - PTA! They knew that calling it "The Great PMS Chocolate Harvest" was probably not PC; yet they wanted to give proper honor and tribute to the day . . . thus All Hallow Eve was born.
Now, where?, you might ask, did the spooky part come in. Remember back to the mom's hiding in the shadows . . . well, that's where! Ever now and again, an innocent neighbor caught a glimpse of movement and noise in the shadows. Looking from the light into the darkness, they could not focus their eyes on what was 'out there,' leaving the uneasy residents to their
own imaginations. Was it that stray black cat? Was that a face [mom's silhouette] on those recently harvested pumpkins? Was it a witch riding her broomstick in the sky [mom sitting on a nearby tree limb-wind blowing]?
Of course, as with all tales, over the ages, they have been twisted, exaggerated, and blown all out of proportion. I think, if we just stick to the facts, we can easily make it through the day!

Health and Behavior Almanac for yesterday (and today)
Partly crappy with scattered sneezes, dripping, and sore throat. (Good days to carry around a kleenex box) Periods of torrential attitude problems have led to generalized grumpiness which has settled in all over the house.

Happy Birthday Dad!
Today is my Dad's 60th birthday! Happy Birthday, Dad!
This photo is a four generation picture of my Grandma, my Dad, Panda, and myself. There is much less of my Dad now - he went on a diet and walking spree and is much lighter now!
But, we don't have to worry about the fact that he turned 60 today. Anyone who knows him knows that he'll never act his age! HA! :)
(those of you who have never met my Dad - that was supposed to be a funny compliment - he loves to joke - and certainly doesn't look or act like he's 60!)

Well, pretty close...
I consulted Little Lucy and we're both pretty sure this is how the conversation with Monkey went on Sunday.
As she watched the Little Professor at the end of the service she asked Little Lucy, "What is he doing?"
"He is the acolyte"
"Well, why is he taking the lights off the candles?....Oh, does that mean church is over?"

I forgot!
Little Lucy....
You're going to have to help me out - I forgot what exactly Monkey said about the candles as The Little Professor was serving as acolyte. It was really cute the way she said it - I should have written it down right then!

I caved...
I've been enjoying the nice temperatures we have had, especially since it meant that I didn't have to use the air conditioner or the heater!
That ended tonight. After walking around all day with two heavy layers on and then adding a blanket to that tonight, I decided to finally turn on the heater. It's hard to be productive while dragging around a blanket!

Pleasant Surprises
After lunch today, Lady Bug told me not to come down stairs. She shut the door to the basement and went down and vacuumed the tv area of the basement. All by herself. Without me asking her to do it. Cool!
At about the same time, Monkey was asking me if she was a good "counter". (She had been working on counting in math.) I told her that she was. Then she asked if she was a good "skip counter". (We most recently been working on skip counting by 2's) I told her that we were working on that and she was doing pretty well. She then proceeded to skip count to 10 with no trouble at all and to 20 with a little help. Apparently she soaked in more than I realized!

Sausage Potato Soup
Had this for supper tonight. MMMM - Love it! Here's the recipe:
2 qt. water
1 T dried onion
5-6 medium potatoes, peeled, quartered & cubed
2 T or 4 cubes chicken bouillon
1 C. celery, chopped
2 carrots, shredded or cut up
1 lb. bulk country sausage
1/4 tsp. pepper
1 T dried onion
2 tsp. celery, chopped
1/4 C flour
1 C milk
24 slices American cheese
Bring water to a boil; add bouillon, dried onion, cup of celery, potatoes, and carrots. Simmer until vegetables are tender. In a frying pan brown sausage, 1 T dried onion and 2 tsp. celery until vegetables are tender. (Do not drain grease.) Sprinkle flour and pepper over mixture; stir to combine and add milk while continuing to stir until smooth. Add sausage mixture to the liquid vegetable mixture and gradually add cheese slices. Stir and simmer until ready to serve. Makes about 4 1/2 quarts.
My own variations: use frozen hash browns instead of potatoes or run real potatoes through the food processor on shred (did not peel - still worked just fine!), use different flavors of sausage (the sausage with bacon is one we really enjoy).
Good News Times Two
I have three friends who have been involved in long, drawn out adoption processes. They have been in my prayers.
I have great news. One friend just picked up her 5 year old Haitian son this past Tuesday! I got to meet him at piano lessons on Saturday. He is so cute! What a blessing!
Well, tonight (Sunday) I got a phone call from another friend. They have been matched with a little girl in Korea! Oh, her pictures are very sweet! Once all the paper work goes through both countries, they will be able to fly over and pick her up. Estimated time is about 2 to 5 months.
So, to my third friend - if you are reading my blog now - don't give up hope. I'm waiting for my phone to ring!!!

Busy Weekend
I've been quiet on my blog, with good reason. Here's how the past several days have gone:
Friday:
*Went to Sams, met Lucy there so we could both get our shopping done. Then visited a friend and helped her work on her computer. While I was at it - I set her up on the Loopers! Meanwhile the girls had a blast - they rode a horse, petted some bunnies, visited the goats, road around the farm in a wagon, and much more! From there we met my sister-in-law and my niece and nephew for pizza and then went to their house so the kids could play. We didn't get home until 10:30!
Saturday:
*Lessons with my 5 year old group, Brian had orchestra rehearsal (also on Thursday and Friday night), grocery shopping, laundry, etc......
Sunday:
*Church, kissed my Godson's sweet little head and stared at him while he was making cute half asleep baby faces (LOVE IT), lunch, Brian to orchestra, "gutted" Lady Bug's bedroom and cleaned/rearranged (still have to get to the closet), started sorting through clothes again (summer to winter and sorting sizes), fun phone call from a friend (that will be another blog post).
I wonder why I'm tired! HA!

Newsflash for Sen. Obama
After going to bed, I started thinking about the part of the debates that I did get to see in which the abortion issue came up.
**Stepping onto soapbox***
Sen. Obama, I've got news for you. I work with nurses on a Maternal/Child unit. I can't come up with a health reason for a mother in a late term pregnancy that would necessitate an abortion! Those babies at that point, if needed for the health of the mother, could be delivered safely and as Sen. McCain stated adopted out to loving families.
There are plenty of loving families out there waiting to adopt. Why do you want to punish the babies? As eliquently as you may try to speak and cover up the truth, it's not working on me! It's just sad and sick!
